Cuba cancels events, rations sales as fuel shortages worsen

HAVANA (AP) — Cuba’s fuel shortages have increased dramatically with authorities suspending activities, including a concert by the country’s national symphony, as well as rationing gasoline sales and moving some universities’ classes online. Cubans have experiences shortages of all kinds of goods amid the recent economic crisis but the cancellation of activities because of fuel shortages had not been reported previously. The cancellations come following days of long lines to get gasoline at filling stations. Experts say the lack of gasoline and diesel is not due to a lack of crude oil — Cuba produces about half of what it needs and buys the rest from other countries – but to the difficulties refining it. “There is no lack of crude oil in Cuba,” said Jorge Piñón, senior research fellow at the University of Texas at Austin’s Energy Institute. Victim identified in deadly shooting at south Austin homeless encampment

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police released the name of the victim involved in an April 20 shooting in south Austin.APD said officers initially responded to reports of gunshots at a homeless encampment in a wooded area near the 4900 block of West U.S. Highway 290 around 11 a.m. MAP: Where have Austin’s homicides occurred in 2023? The 911 caller told police someone stopped them and told them that someone had been shot within the camp, APD said. Police found 27-year-old John Powers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.Several persons of interest have been identified by investigators, the release states. 2 die in weekend fire at Duluth apartment building that has seen other fatal blazes

Two tenants died last weekend as a result of a fire in an eight-unit apartment building in Duluth. The names of the deceased have not yet been released, pending notification of family members.The Duluth Fire Department was called to 631 E. Third St. at about 6 a.m. Saturday, and firefighters arrived within about three minutes of dispatch, encountering smoke and quickly advancing flames, said Deputy Chief of Operations Mike Consie.Consie did not have details about exactly how many people were in the building at the time of the call but said a number of tenants were rescued by firefighters, and others were able to make their way out of the building on their own.
