Clayton Valley football coach Tim Murphy announces his retirement

Tim Murphy’s long ride as a high school football coach is over.After 221 victories, 20 league championships, three Northern California regional titles and one state crown over 26 years at three schools, Murphy told the Bay Area News Group in a text that on Monday that he will not be back for a 12th season at Clayton Valley Charter.“I was trying to muster up the energy for Spring ball, and I just couldn’t do it,” Murphy, 53, wrote.Murphy has hinted about retiring, telling this news organization in August 2021 that he planned to step down after the season that year.But Murphy did not step down.He returned last fall and led the Ugly Eagles to the East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division championship and the North Coast Section Division I final for the second consecutive year.In 11 seasons at Clayton Valley, Murphy guided the Concord school to 12 league and four NCS titles. Unhoused man found dead at camp along Oakland freeway

OAKLAND — An unhoused man was found dead Monday morning inside a make-shift structure on a freeway offramp in North Oakland, authorities said.Authorities were trying to identify the man, who appeared to be in his 40s or 50s, the California Highway Patrol said.The CHP said a preliminary examination indicated the man may have died from a drug overdose but that an autopsy would determine the exact cause of death. There was no apparent foul play, the CHP said.The man was found dead about 11:12 a.m. Monday inside a wood and tarp structure alongside the Martin Luther King Jr. WaY offramp from eastbound Highway 24, the CHP said.How long the man was dead before someone saw him and called the CHP is under investigation.The offramp was closed approximately 40 minutes while the CHP investigated.Anyone with information about the death is asked to call the CHP at 510-457-2875.The death is the second one involving an unhoused person in the same area in a month.On April  3, a 53-year-old man...

‘Multiple’ fatalities in Illinois crash during dust storm

By Joe Sutton | CNNMultiple fatalities have been reported after a dust storm caused at least 40 to 60 cars to crash along a major highway in Central Illinois on Monday, officials said.The crashes along I-55 led to the interstate closing in Sangamon and Montgomery counties, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Activists to gather at SF Walgreens where fatal shooting took place

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- A group of community activists plan to gather Monday afternoon at the San Francisco Walgreens where a security guard allegedly shot and killed a young person last week. Police arrested the guard, 33-year-old Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony, following the shooting reported at 6:33 p.m. in the area of Market and Fourth streets on Thursday. HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy was placed on the 15-day injured list with a sore right shoulder before the start of a series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.Urquidy left Sunday’s start in the sixth inning after feeling discomfort in the shoulder. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday, 160 days after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.The two-time National League MVP indicated on Instagram that an appointment with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday went well and that he was cleared to return.The Phillies arrived in Los Angeles overnight to begin a three-game series against the Dodgers on Monday. ESPN was the first to report that Harper was cleared.The timing of the return would complete a stunning recovery for Harper. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma’s attorney general asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to grant death row inmate Richard Glossip a stay of execution, saying there were enough problems with Glossip’s conviction that he deserves a new trial.In an unusual move for a prosecutor, Republican Attorney General Gentner Drummond filed his motion agreeing with defense attorneys that Glossip deserves a stay.Drummond said that while he doesn’t believe Glossip is innocent, he didn’t receive a fair trial. Crawford, who has a strained right calf, was injured in the fourth inning of San Francisco’s 16-11 loss to San Diego Saturday night in Mexico City.
